Shortly before the turn of the (20th) century a middle class had established itself and a new concept was born, leisure! Up until then, most had only enough time to work, eat and sleep. With their emergence, the middle class demanded to see things that they had never seen and go places they had never dreamed. Travel by train expanded readily available destinations to a growing portion of the population.
European rail travel was years ahead of the United States. As such, French and later British Railroad posters dominated the scene. While American railroad posters from this period are more difficult to find, they do exist and are highly sought after. Some of the finest examples are those from the New York Central Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, the New Haven Railroad, Northern Pacific Railways and early Chicago Rapid Transit.
